A note in the margins

Marginalium

My commentary on something from elsewhere on the web.

Jordan Crawford’s companion piece to his home server without port forwarding article. This one walks through actually setting up Tinc, a VPN that establishes an encrypted tunnel between a cloud server with a fixed IP and your home server. The home server initiates outgoing connections to the cloud server, allowing bidirectional traffic routing through the secure tunnel. The key benefit is that you get static IP addresses within the VPN network that you can rely on, regardless of what your ISP hands out. I reference this in my Server 102 article as the practical implementation of the relay node concept. Note: Docker containers are an alternative install method if you’d rather not compile.
